Between February 15 – 28, 2020, 43 samples were checked: 51% (22) were substances and 49% (21) were used paraphernalia.

Checked samples by expected drug

When a sample is submitted to be checked, the drug that sample is expected to contain is recorded. Of the 43 samples checked between February 15 – 28, 2020:

  • 27 were expected to be fentanyl
  • 12 were expected to be other drugs, including: 2C-B, 4-AcO-DMT, 5-MeO-DiPT, carfentanil, cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, methandrostenolone, testosterone enanthate, and a Z-drug
  • 2 were expected to be a polysubstance
  • 2 did not have a stated expected drug

Expected fentanyl samples

Of the 43 samples checked between February 15 – 28, 2020, 63% (27) were expected to be fentanyl (36% were substances and 64% were used paraphernalia).

  • 11% (3) contained no fentanyl
  • 4% (1) contained only fentanyl
  • 85% (23) contained fentanyl and other drugs

Of the 27 samples expected to be fentanyl, 85% (23) contained fentanyl and other drugs. Other drugs found included:

  • 78% (18) contained caffeine
  • 61% (14) contained one or more benzodiazepine or benzodiazepine-related drug*:
    • 48% (11) contained flualprazolam*
    • 35% (8) contained etizolam*
  • 57% (13) contained despropionyl fentanyl (4-ANPP)*
  • 30% (7) contained cocaine
  • 22% (5) contained phenacetin*

Other expected drug samples containing unexpected noteworthy drugs

Of the remaining 16 samples checked between February 15 – 28, 2020, meaning samples that were not expected to be fentanyl, 19% (3) contained one or more unexpected noteworthy drug. Unexpected noteworthy drugs found included:

  • 100% (1) of expected carfentanil samples contained fentanyl*
  • 50% (1) of expected cocaine samples contained phenacetin*
  • 50% (1) of samples that did not have a stated expected drug contained fentanyl*
  • 50% (1) of samples that did not have a stated expected drug contained flualprazolam*

 

*Unexpected noteworthy drug: “Noteworthy drugs” are drugs that are highly potent, linked to overdose or other adverse effects, or may not be desired by some clients. Noteworthy drugs are called out when they are unexpectedly found in checked samples.
