Checked samples by sample type
Between February 1 – 14, 2020, 70 samples were checked: 71% (50) were substances and 29% (20) were used paraphernalia.
Checked samples by expected drug
When a sample is submitted to be checked, the drug that sample is expected to contain is recorded. Of the 70 samples checked between February 1 – 14, 2020:
- 28 were expected to be fentanyl
- 9 were expected to be cocaine
- 4 were expected to be MDMA
- 3 were expected to be crack cocaine
- 3 were expected to be methamphetamine
- 21 were expected to be other drugs, including: 2C-P, 3-MeO-PCE, 4-AcO-DET, 4-HO-MET, 5-MeO-MiPT, amphetamine, carfentanil, DMT, down, DPT, etaqualone, heroin, LSD, mescaline, O-DSMT, tsunami, and Viagra
- 1 was expected to be a polysubstance
- 1 did not have a stated expected drug
Expected fentanyl samples
Of the 70 samples checked between February 1 – 14, 2020, 40% (28) were expected to be fentanyl (54% were substances and 46% were used paraphernalia).
Presence of fentanyl in expected fentanyl samples (28)
- 11% (3) contained only fentanyl
- 89% (25) contained fentanyl and other drugs

Of the 28 samples expected to be fentanyl, 89% (25) contained fentanyl and other drugs. Other drugs found included:
- 92% (23) contained caffeine
- 60% (15) contained despropionyl fentanyl (4-ANPP)*
- 40% (10) contained one or more benzodiazepine or benzodiazepine-related drug*:
- 40% (10) contained etizolam*
- 24% (6) contained flualprazolam*
- 36% (9) contained 6-MAM (heroin-related)
- 36% (9) contained heroin
- 12% (3) contained acetyl fentanyl*
- 8% (2) contained norfentanyl*
- 4% (1) contained furanyl UF-17 (opioid-related)*
Other expected drug samples containing unexpected noteworthy drugs
Of the remaining 42 samples checked between February 1 – 14, 2020, meaning samples that were not expected to be fentanyl, 26% (11) contained one or more unexpected noteworthy drug. Unexpected noteworthy drugs found included:
Expected cocaine samples (9):
- 22% (2) contained levamisole*
- 11% (1) contained phenacetin*
Expected crack cocaine samples (3):
- 67% (2) contained phenacetin*
Expected methamphetamine samples (3):
- 33% (1) contained fentanyl*
Expected carfentanil samples (2):
- 50% (1) contained despropionyl fentanyl (4-ANPP)*
- 50% (1) contained fentanyl*
- 50% (1) contained furanyl UF-17 (opioid-related)*
Expected down samples (2):
- 50% (1) contained fentanyl*
- 50% (1) contained phenacetin*
Expected heroin samples (2):
- 100% (2) contained phenacetin*
*Unexpected noteworthy drug: “Noteworthy drugs” are drugs that are highly potent, linked to overdose or other adverse effects, or may not be desired by some clients. Noteworthy drugs are called out when they are unexpectedly found in checked samples.
